How to Choose a Good Topic for a HubPages Article

When you are writing on HubPages, or other similar sites, you want to choose a topic that doesn’t already have multiple articles. There are millions of articles, for instance, about how to lose weight. If you add another, it may never be found by the search engines. There are currently 89 million search results about How to Lose Weight. Reduce the search by writing about How to Lose Weight with the South Beach Diet and your competition is only 892,000. But when you change your topic to How to Lose Weight with the South Beach Diet using Chinese herbs, (not a real topic)then there are only 171,000 search results. When you narrow the search you increase the likely hood that someone will find your article should they search for that specific combination. The more vague you are, the more chance your article has of being lost.

For the topic Collapsible Wheelbarrows there are 20,000 search results on collapsible wheelbarrows when I do a Google search. When I do a search on HubPages on the topic Collapsible Wheelbarrows, there are only 24 articles returned in the search, but only two of those are about collapsible wheelbarrows, the rest are about regular wheelbarrows.

Before I wrote my article about Collapsible Wheelbarrows I searched on HubPages and realized that when I did write my article, it would go to the first page of the HubPages search because it would be one of two articles about Collapsible Wheelbarrows (the other is called Folding Wheelbarrows).

I realized Collapsible Wheelbarrows was a good product to do a product review about because they are middle of the range Amazon products. You can do product reviews about books or movies and if someone buys one, you don’t get much commission. If you write a product review about something costing 100s of dollars then it is less likely that someone will buy it. So it’s good to do product reviews about items that cost about $50-$100.

I don’t know how popular a topic it’s going to be, it’s possible I’ve written a hub and it comes up first in the search and no one’s going to search for it, but if someone does search for it on HubPages, my article will come up on the first page. Since it’s been written, my article hovers around the 4^th page of Google.
